Final Project Proposal

For my final project, I want to create a fusion of Egyptian pottery (the Olla) and Morrocan lantern geometry. My vision is to create the structure of the Olla with the imprinted pattern of the Morrocan pattern. Thus the outcome would be something similar to the middle photo above of modern Egyptian pottery.

Deliverables

  • A program script that will print the surface of the pottery. How to carve/extrude out the surface of the pottery without ruining the design?
  • A printed small sample before using a clay printer or ender to print the larger final print.
  • Several design code that presents a variety of different patterns to create a set of unique objects.
  • Maintains one or two structures as the original setting of the pottery.

Related Work

The Olla is a pottery design originating from North Africa. The purpose of the Olla is to keep the liquid (usually water) cold for a long period of time. Additionally, the mechanism of the Olla allows one to place lukewarm water which over time cools up. Although I would not make the Olla hold and keep the water cold, I still want to make a final project with the Olla shape and structure.

The Morrocan lanterns emphasize a great value in the art of geometry. Understanding how the geometry is designed is reflected in the outcome when the design is complete. Additionally, the variety of patterns builds up to create an overall large-scale puzzle with unique movements. For my project, I want to highlight these patterns on the surface of the pottery.

Timeline

  • November 1: Work on code that generates patterns using turtle geometry and gcode.
  • November 10: Finalize the pot structures set.
  • November 19: Merge the design pattern on the surface of the pottery and adjust what is needed.
  • November 24: Print the structure on a small scale using the ender printer.
  • November 27-December 10: Begin printing large scale in clay.

  1. What beautiful designs! I like your idea of starting small-scale as a test and moving on to the bigger pieces. I love your inspiration and I can’t wait to see how the pieces turn out.

    1. Hi Jaime,
Thank you! I think it would be a a great learning process to test the design on a small scale before shifting to a larger scale.

  2. Your project idea is super interesting! Combining Egyptian pottery (Olla) with Moroccan lantern patterns is a cool mix of cultures. I’m excited to see how you’ll keep the Olla shape while adding those intricate Moroccan designs. Good luck with your project – I can’t wait to see the final results!

    1. Hi Nathaniel,
Thank you! I also wanted to merge these cultures to learn more about the geometry behind ancient and modern art. I believe it would be an interesting mix.
