Ubiquitous Computing

Fall 2022

This class will explore what is possible when we embed computation into physical objects. We’ll explore technology and interface design that involves working with real-world objects and materials. Students will have the opportunity to learn about the topic through a series of hands on projects and by reading a series of papers in Ubiquitous Computing and related areas.

Students should leave the course with an ability to build interactive objects that include microcontrollers, sensors, and actuators. Students should gain an understanding of basic circuits, digital electronics, and embedded programming as well as basic physical prototyping skills. Students should be able to think critically about the ways that people interact with tangible objects that include computation as well as design and build such objects themselves. Students should also learn about the history of Ubiquitous Computing as an important research area in computer science.
