Ceramics and Technology
In collaboration with Jennifer Jacobs, from the University of California at Santa Barbara, Manuel Montoya from the Anderson School of Management, and Tim Castillo and Ted Jojola from Architecture and Planning, we are exploring relationships between ceramics, technology and business. Our aim is twofold: first, to co-develop new technologies and new ceramic work in collaboration with ceramic artists, and second, to support small and rural craft-based businesses around New Mexico (NM). The project has a few different components:
- We are interviewing ceramic artists to better understand the range of ceramic practice in NM.
- We are hosting a series of funded artist residencies in which artists will collaborate with Hand and Machine researchers to create new ceramic work and new technology to support ceramics practice.
- We are organizing exhibitions, to take place at UNM and in venues around the state, to showcase the work developed in our residencies. Summer 2022 residents
- We are hosting a series of conferences to support small and rural craft-based businesses in NM. Funding is available to cover travel and housing costs for participants.
- We are traveling to communities around NM to teach workshops that focus on craft, technology, and business, making use of the Mobile Maker Lab.
If you are a NM-based ceramic artist or craft-based business owner and are interested in participating in this project, we would love to hear from you!
