My idea is to produce a wooden tongue drum utilizing the CNC machine to produce wooden designs, both decorative and functional, for the drum. I enjoy playing instruments and have dabbled in creating a few different instruments, so I&#8217;m excited to use computation in doing so. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Deliverables<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I will to produce a wooden tongue drum where the shapes of the tongues are computationally generated. I will probably have to hand tune the tongues but will also investigate what sizes and shapes will get me closer to the desired pitches. The outside of the drum will also be decorated with computationally designed and CNC cut wooden pieces. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Related Works<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Computational Design of Metallophone Contact Sounds\" width=\"1140\" height=\"641\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/tVoPAgvLzJc?start=366&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">This group designed a &#8216;zoolophone&#8217; which optimized the shape of the pieces to resonate at certain frequencies to produce desired pitches, and they also metal 3d printed cups with desired pitches. Linked below is the primary paper describing their work. I won&#8217;t be attempting to produce such a sophisticated algorithm to produces shapes already in the correct tuning, but I would like the tongues of the drum to be in interesting shapes\/forms, probably more abstract, and would like to do more research on the general sizing of the tongues to get them closer to the correct pitches before tuning. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p natural grain of the wood can produce interesting patterns as well. In this documentation the author denotes that they used Rhino Grasshopper as well. I have done some slight investigation and it seems as though there are ways to utilize Grasshopper with the CNC machine so I will be investigating that more to hopefully use this tool we have been learning in conjunction with exploring the CNC machine.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another inspirations is of course, people who have built wooden tongue drums.
