Andrew F’s Final Project Proposal

I took this class because I was interested in 3D printing, but didn’t know a whole lot about the subject. Throughout the class I have learned a ton about modeling, coding, and printing, so I want to exhibit those attributes in my final project. I am going to create a collection of gifts including 3D printed flowers and a map of downtown Vancouver CA.

Team Members: ME

Deliverables: (small) 3D map of downtown Vancouver as well as 3 printed flowers (unsure of what flowers I want to do)

Week 1 (Nov 18 – 22): I think the map is going to be the focal point of this project so I really want to get going on a design in rhino and have at least a mapping by the end of the week.

week 2 (Nov 25 – 29): While I print the map and make adjustments as needed, I will start working on the algorithms and modeling that I will be using to print my flowers. I’m thinking that I might just make the bulbs instead of trying to print a small stem, but I am not 100% sure on this.

week 3 (Dec 2 – 6): Week 3 is going to be mainly printing, making small adjustments, and adding more detail. By this point I really want to have the designs done and focus on printing so that if any errors occur, I have plenty of time to fix them.

  1. Hello, Andrew!
Great idea for your project! Also, cherry blossoms could be a nice choice for the flowers to add a local Vancouver touch. Also, are you thinking of keeping the flowers realistic or more stylized look? Overall, great idea for your project!

  2. Hi Andrew,

Darlene Farris’ prints look great, and look like a great reference for your work. I’m eager to learn more come presentation day. With that said, why the map of Vancouver and flowers, specifically? Are you from there or do you have loved ones there who love flowers? Looking forward to see how your prints look in-person, and good luck!

  3. Hi Andrew,
I like that you are utilizing the 3D map concept that we discussed in class. I think its a very cool concept that I know takes time to print. Are you going to utilize the topographic maps points from the sources we had in class or are you going to make a drawing or rendition of it on your own and recreate Vancouver using various rhino and grasshopper tools. When it comes to your flowers are you looking for more algorithmic designed ones I know there’s some good research on how certain plants an flowers have pedals arranged and shaped in mathematical ways that I’m sure you could definitely recreate with code.

    1. Hello Andrew,

I’m not entirely sure if I want to do the topographic map or if I want to create my own design. I think for the flowers I want to do a combination of some that are algorithmically designed and some that I design myself.
