Large Assignment 2: Andrew Foster

For this assignment I first wanted to create a bulbous vessel, I played around with the values in my code until I found a round shape that I thought looked nice. For the other two I wanted to do a triangle top and a rounder top, I played with the twist function for these two vessels as I wanted vessel 1 to be a bulb shape.

Reflection:

For this project I knew I wanted to do a bulb-like vessel, but had no idea what I wanted to do for the other vessels. I was able to find two that I really liked the look of by messing around with the parameters in grasshopper. I don’t think my sense of authorship feels any different because at the end of the day I made these vessels.

With programming, designing things like this becomes so much easier. I can mess with the parameters and see the interaction with rhino as I am playing around. Using the traditional design process, I would have to think of exactly what I wanted to make and then make it within rhino and if I didn’t like it, I would have to delete a large portion or even start over. This way seems a lot more fluid and allows for quick changes that one can keep if they like or undo if they don’t.

  1. Hi Andrew,
I really like your bulb vessel, it’s a very fun idea! I also played around with the parameters rather than going for something specific. I agree that using parameters streamlines the design process. Being able to discover interesting forms quickly is extremely useful.

  2. Andrew,
I love what you said about the parametric design process being more fluid. And I also experienced the freedom that comes with being able to make or undo quick changes. I prefer processes that involve trial and error rather than preconception of every detail.

As far as your vases go, I love that you had a couple basic ideas when you started, and you made those things happen. My favorite is the bulb vase, but the twisty design with the rounder top is striking too!

  3. Hi Andrew,
I really like your twisted vase with the flat top with all the issues I had with my prints having holes and getting misaligned I would have never thought I could print such a cool piece like yours. Your second piece with the triangle too is similar to one that I made as well but printed very horribly. When its come to the process, I truly agree with you that using programming to create the vessels streamlines the process significantly and helps with the initial creation of the vessel and allows your to quickly change the design without feeling like a hassle.
