Introduction – Andrea Torres

Personal Introduction

Hi! My name is Andrea Torres, I am a undergraduate student majoring in Computer Science with a minor in mathematics. This is my last semester and I will be graduating come December. When I first started college I originally wanted to either major in art or mathematics, yet some how I became a CS student. I chose to enroll in this course because I figured it was the perfect opportunity to dive in a subset of computer science that combined two of my favorite things.

Project: ReGrow Willow

Designers: Tenure-Track Prof. Moritz Dörstelmann: Professorship for Digital Design & Fabrication (DDF); Prof. Dr.-Ing. Professor Riccardo La Magna: Professorship Design of Structures (dos); Department of Architecture, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT)

A concept that intrigues me with within computation fabrication and design is the use of natural materials for structural design. One project that caught my attention was funded by by Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. The designers focused creating structures out of sustainable materials that can be used in replace of traditional materials that will hold the same structural integrity as say concrete and rebar. The designers use fabrication to wind willow branches into patterns that have structural reinforcement by utilizing an “adaptive weaving” approach, t earth is then pumped strategically in between the weaved willow branches to create sections. Finally and what I find to be the most important part of the design is the reusability within the project is the connection of the fabricated pieces. With reversible screws each sections can be repurposed and reused whether that be in a different design or composted. This project is fascinating because it not only utilizes natural materials but also aims to eliminate waste, reduce carbon emissions, and enhance the reusability of the materials involved.

  1. Hello Andrea,
This reminds me alot of bonsai with the binding and thosehedge made out woven willows. Holy flux! Everyone should click that link to website. I thought it looked simple but thats a lot of planing and bespoke things(3d printer that prints trees!!!) to do that plan is insane. It is realy sad that is this just a temporary construction.

  2. Hi Andrea,
It’s amazing to see these structures are able to be made with natural materials. The structure reminds me of basket weaving due to the patterns. I’m curious to see the durability of natural materials and how reusable they are after they have experienced the elements. Either way I believe the structure to be beautiful.

  3. Hi Andrea! Funny thing- my roommate also has come into college interested in Math and Art and right now she’s trying to double major in them. Art and STEM is the coolest pairing in my opinion. The willow branches are a very cool material, I am very fascinated by weaving, that’s what I did my post on. It’s cool to see it implemented at different scales and the expanse of materials that people can weave with. Thanks for sharing!
