Process
I wasn’t really sure what I wanted to make when I started this assignment so I ended up playing around with the the turtle and some geometry until I started to get a feel for what I could make. I started with an object that is a bit like a ninja star.

The shape is eight half circles switching the direction I turn every other time. I added the texture to the outer four half circles thinking it would be spikier and more random but it turned out mostly just bumpy.
I really liked the string art structures from the turtle extruder paper so my second object is inspired by those. The main body is a circle and every other layer I would rotate around the outer circle some multiple of 30 degrees and draw a triangle on top of and connected to the circle.

I printed this one twice because it came out smaller than I wanted the first time and the first few layers of the inner triangles were sticking to the bed so I added a few buffer layers of the circle before adding the triangles. I did still have issues with a few of the strands breaking or being longer than others but it came out pretty nice.

My third object I was playing around with the movement in z and spent too much time trying and failing to get a vessel to work so running low on time I went back to simple shapes and tried to make a wheel of sorts with a raised inner circle and the “spokes” inclining up to the level of the inner circle.

Design Process
I didn’t have any set ideas when I started and just played around with different possibilities until I got my first object. After my first object I looked through the examples that were provided in the prompt and found the string art structures and knew I wanted to do something similar so I chose to do a star as the string art using triangles. The non-planar movements gave me the most difficulty and I was having no luck trying to make a vessel work I just couldn’t wrap my head around how to get it to work so I went back and looked through some of the other papers and saw the dream catcher like thing one had and had the idea of making the wheel the way I did. I also made this one way too small at first and when I scaled it up I found I hadn’t made my distance calculation in a way that it was easily scalable so I fought with that for a bit until I got it working.
My Code: MichelRobertLA4
Hi Michel, I also wasn’t sure what I wanted to make for this assignment, and just let my random creative code take the wheel. I wish I had seen your post before I created my pieces, I would’ve wanted to create something as cool as your objects. I love the way you created your object, with the strands forming into the star!
Hi Michel,
I really enjoyed seeing your forms and how creative they were! Specifically your ninja star turned out really cool looking and I don’t think has any equivalent in the rest of class. The non-planar movement was very difficult so I can relate there!
Hey Michel,
I think your wheel design is really well done, I went for a similar design, but I really like how yours looks. I think the spokes turned out really well and it printed very smoothly, well done!
