I would like to expand on my Data Physicalization project for my final project. I would like to print multiple larger pieces with more detailed terrain, and even print full spheres rather than just half spheres. The pieces will include fire perimeter data, which will determine the shape on the inside of the sphere. When shining a light through these globes, the fire perimeter will become clear. When the lights are off, the elevation will be more visible.
This project is largely inspired by my work at SimTable, in which we run models and visualize fires and other natural disasters displayed on a projector-augmented sand table.
I would also like to produce some kind of companion pieces that show a more detailed visualization of the “time of arrival” perimeters of the fires to be displayed with the elevation globes, with interesting structures to suggest fire-like shapes, potentially printing on fabric to produce dynamic shapes. I have been inspired by work done by Drag and Drop studio in the past, a computational fabrication company with nature-inspired designs, and I would like to produce similar pieces that play with light and structure.
The final project will include 5 to 10 pieces of locations where major fires have occurred.
By November 14th, the code for the generation of the pieces should be complete.
By December 1st, the majority of the pieces should be printed.
The remainder of the time will be dedicated to taking photos of the finished products and the write-up.
Your original design for the data physicalization was incredible, I can’t wait to see how you expand on it.
Hey Jaime,
I was actually inspired with your half sphere prints as well for my final project! Its a really really cool idea and maybe there’s some potential for cooperation with the process of printing a full sphere (this seems like it’ll be difficult from my research). Please feel free to check out my proposal and let me know if it sounds like anything may be of use to you, and I really like the expansion of your original with this idea!
Hey Jaime,
Your prints for the data physicalization project turned out super cool! I’m excited to see how a full sphere will turn out based on what we’ve already seen. If I remember correctly, you mentioned that supports weren’t needed for the half spheres, do you think you’ll need them for the full spheres? Great idea!
