Large Assignment 2: Parametric Vessels

September 25, 2023 Elijah Maestas Large Assignment 2 – Vessels, Student Work 2023

Design Process:

For my design pieces I mainly tried to imitate various props through movies I have seen, such as specific pots and things of that nature. I tried to make mine more similar to those in that aspect so some of them ended up coming out better in my own opinion better than others, and some where just hard to generate in general seeing as how some of my initial designs ended up breaking with how fragile they came out. But overall I’m happy with the designs and can share more on the movie aspect and what I was inspired by if you want to learn more.

Reflection on Parametric Design:

For me personally I always loved the idea of wood carving and marble sculpting, but seeing as how I’m rather clumsy myself and lack the necessary dexterity my designs rarely came out well and always missed some sort of crucial element that I could never quite put my finger on. But now seeing as how this assignment has shown me that I can take myself out of the equation and still be able to create something with extreme detail and craftmanship, it truly is something exciting to even think about. I think in regards to disadvantages the only thing would be learning how to actually implement your ideas onto the rhino program itself, as it can be difficult to try and start out using it and not knowing a thing about it. But once you put some time in to learn I feel like anyone could load up a file and create something, even me!

Reflection of the creative agency and intent:

For my designs I did not do the process of adding anything new in the parameters, I simply adjusted the already existing variables into something that I liked or found inspiration in. In terms of feeling like this is my own design I would say yes, it was my own idea’s and vision that crafted this little object into life and I am proud of the way they were manifested into the 3d world. I will say however that I cannot completely take full credit for the design, as although I did make the final project, the framework was laid for me by the professor and as such, she also helped in many aspects for this project. To me it’s sort of akin to someone creating the general shape of a bear and giving that shape to someone else for final details, yes the bear could have already existed, but it was both artist’s touch that shaped the final project and making it unique to both of them.

  1. Hi Elijah! Great job with your vessels. I like that you took inspiration from objects from a video game. I would love to have seen some pictures of the inspiration as well. I also really like how your vessels twist more where they are thinner. It makes it look like the twist is a really intentional and part of how the form is made.

  2. Hi Elijah, I loved your vessels and the inspiration behind them! The last one really does look like candy, it was my favorite. You prints were a nice quality too which is not easy.
