Postdoc / Post-MFA opening

A visiting researcher position in the area of digital fabrication, with an emphasis on 3D printing, is available in the Hand and Machine Lab at the University of New Mexico. This is a full-time position for a two-year term. Work with a team of computer scientists, artists, and designers to develop new digital fabrication technology, including software, machines, materials, and workflows. Your expertise does not have to span all of these areas. We are open to hiring someone from a variety of different backgrounds, but the applicant should have deep expertise in at least one of them, i.e.: be an expert ceramics craftsperson/artist OR a researcher/engineer with a background in designing and building novel digital fabrication machines OR an HCI researcher who has experience developing new design software and workflows for digital fabrication, etc.

The ideal candidate should excel at working creatively and independently and should be interested in collaborating with people from a variety of different disciplines. He/she/they should be excited about working in digital fabrication and 3D printing and should have broad research interests that include technology and design. He/she/they should be resourceful and comfortable working in both software and in the physical world. Particularly useful and relevant skills include experience with: programming of any kind; 3D modeling; sustainable materials, ceramic craft including wheel throwing, slab building, and slip casting; materials testing using Universal Testing Machines; 3D printer design, construction, repair, and maintenance; graphics programming; modeling and simulation.

Responsibilities Include

  • Collaborating with researchers and students to develop new digital fabrication technologies and applications
  • Conducting independent research in digital fabrication
  • Assisting in the design and teaching of courses related to computational design and digital fabrication
  • Maintaining and repairing digital fabrication equipment
  • General lab duties including: leading machine trainings and lab orientation sessions, assisting graduate and undergraduate students, supplies ordering, lab upkeep, etc.

Requirements

  • A PhD or MFA in a relevant subject including but not limited to: ceramics, computer science, materials science, or mechanical engineering.
  • Demonstrated ability to do independent and creative research in ceramics, digital fabrication, machine design, or materials development.
